I found Nate Navarro delivering laundry to the cabins. He was a short, stocky guy in his mid-30s with dark hair, dark eyes, and a muscular physique. He had a trimmed mustache and goatee. He had a perpetually sad gaze, but there was also something predatory about it.

I flashed my badge and introduced myself. "I’d like to ask you a few questions about last night."

He had a cart full of laundry, picking up and dropping off at the same time. "I already talked to the ship’s security officers."

"When was the last time you entered cabin #1766?"

"I usually turn down the sheets around 7 PM and leave mints on the bed."

"You have access to every cabin on this deck, correct?"

He nodded.

"Did you see anyone unusual in the area?"

"After I finished turndown service, I was done for the day."

"Where were you around midnight last night?"

“I went back to my cabin, changed out of my uniform, and had dinner in the crew mess. Then I went to a crew bar, the Crooked Rudder. The ship’s security has already ruled me out as a potential suspect."

"Have they?"

He gave me a curious nod.

"Is the security team aware of your background?"

His eyes narrowed at me. "What background?"

"I think you know the background that I'm talking about. The one where you were charged with sexual assault in the Philippines."

His face tensed, and he glanced in either direction down the corridor.

There was no one else around.

Through gritted teeth, he said, "Those charges were dismissed."

"Did you casually forget to mention that to your employer?"

"Look, that was a long time ago. How do you know about that, anyway?"

"I know a lot of things. Like your last name isn’t Navarro. It's Torres."

He swallowed hard, then hissed, “Look, man, I didn’t kill Mrs. Ward. I didn't do nothing to nobody. Ever."

He pulled the cart down the passage and picked up another bag of dirty laundry. "I like this job. I need this job. Don't fuck it up for me."

A couple stepped off the elevator and strolled down the passageway.

Nate smiled at them as they passed.

He whispered, "It was nothing but lies. That girl in the Philippines made everything up. She recanted her testimony later."

“I’ll talk to the bartender at the Crooked Rudder. If your story checks out, you got nothing to worry about."

Nate glared at me. "My story will check out. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do."

He continued down the hallway.

I banged on Haley's door while I was there, but she didn't answer.

I called Shelby on my way back to the pool deck and filled her in on my conversation with Nate. I asked her to look into his alibi. She said she would check with the bartender.

The pool deck was alive with activity when I returned. Beauties in tight bikinis frolicked, and thin fabric clung to golden skin. Drink glasses dangled from manicured fingers, and buff dudes with beach bodies tried to score.

JD seemed to be having a good time, soaking up the company of the beautiful young ladies.
